An unforgettable experience - Swimming with whale sharks
From June to September these giants come to the natural park between Cancun and the Isla Holbox. During this period the concentration of plankton is very high so they find enough food.
Whale sharks are the biggest sharks and the biggest known fish. They become around 12 meter with a weight of 12.000 kilo. Whale sharks are despite their enormous size totally harmless. They live on plankton and smallest animals which they filter from the water.
Whale shark are of a grayish, brownish or blueish coloration with light stripes and spots. The belly is of a light color and on the head there is a mouth wide as the whole head. 3600 teeth fill this mouth in 300 small and very narrow rows. Whale sharks prefer the warm waters between 21 and 25 degrees Celsius.
To swim with the whale sharks we leave Cancun and go to the natural park with the speed boats and look for this fantastic giants between Isla Contoy and Isla Holbox. From June to September they find lots of food in this region and it is quite sure to meet them at this time of year.
Our equipment are googols, snorkel, fins and life jacket for self inflating. Always two jump together and swim with the whale sharks. In the beginning you can feel and see that they get nervous and swim faster. After a couple of minutes they get more calm and slow down after they realize that we don’t want them no harm. Now the real fun part starts. You swim with the giants and get the opportunity to come closer, take a close look and enjoy this huge animal.
It is really a giant experience to swim with whale sharks. You feel so small but absolutely great.
